I've already left Kerrville in my mind.

This place is depressing. There is precious little to do but go to bars, and I loath bars, so I stay home in my pajamas and hang out with Stephen Colbert. Truthfully, it is more fun than going out in this town. I am not made for small 20k pop towns. The society is so confining.  There is an extremely small middle class here. All of them either work in the health profession or at Schreiner University. There is a huge population of abject poor that don't seem to have scruples, all of them users, manipulators, and liars, and don't even know they could have a better life.

There are teenage girls here whose mothers encourage them to prey on young college guys, get them drunk, get knocked up for the child support or welfare check.  That, seriously, is their goal from the beginning.  The "child haven" type facilities here are full of children whose moms are on drugs, fathers are absent and their siblings are all products of one-night stands.  In most cases, these moms are still collecting child support and welfare checks for several months until the government learns the whereabouts of the children. It is shocking. It is disheartening. I have seen the underbelly of American society. I am changed by it. And not in a good way.

Apart from five very dear people, and a wonderful University, this town has afforded me no pleasure nor comfort. I am ready to leave Kerrville, Texas forever.
